Program Completion Requirements

The student shall:

  • Maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better in all courses in the approved program as verified on an official transcript with no grade less than “C.”
  • Make a satisfactory score on a written comprehensive examination documenting mastery of the curriculum of the program.

Program Requirements (Certification)

To be admitted to the Master of Arts in Teaching, the prospective educator candidate must meet all requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies, including fingerprints, verification of background clearance and a valid bachelor’s-level professional educator certificate in the same teaching field(s) in which the master’s-level certificate is sought.

Program Requirements (Non-Certification)

To be admitted to the non-certification MAT degree, the prospective student must meet all requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies. Teacher certification is not necessary for this degree program. However, students in this program must concentrate in the same field as their undergraduate major or have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours in the desired field. If a student wishes to change fields, undergraduate coursework may be required to complete any deficiencies that may exist in the new discipline. This degree does not qualify a student for any teaching certificate in the state of Alabama.

Tuition

Graduate tuition is $429 per credit hour. There is a $50 technology fee each semester.

The University of West Alabama is dedicated to keeping education costs affordable and providing students with a full range of grants, scholarships and loans. Approximately 80 percent of UWA students receive some type of financial aid to support their studies.
